Used Mining Equipment South Africa

Large amounts of mining takes place in South Africa, and it contributes a great amount to the country’s economy. South Africa is the world’s second largest producer of gold, but also produces several other precious metals as well as minerals.
Mines can be subsurface mines or surface mines. Subsurface mines are underground mines made of tunnels and shafts. Naturally these mines are more dangerous to operate in than surface mines. Surface mines are mines where the gold is not found as deep underground. Placer deposits of minerals refer to mines where the desired mineral is found mixed with loose rock, gravel or sand, in deposits on the ground or in bodies of water. Lode deposits are more difficult to extract as they are found deep within the veins of other underground rocks.
Mining equipment is needed to make mining easier, safer and quicker. It consists of three types. Heavy duty mining equipment digs the mine and moves the earth away. Refining equipment is used to separate the desired ore from the other rocks. Personnel equipment refers to equipment that aids miners in the mining process, or ensures the safety and protection while doing their jobs.
In surface mining, wheel loaders are used when large quantities of mining materials need to be moved one at a time. Most surface mines have excavators. These machines do most of the digging, and then dump the materials into a dump truck, which then moves the materials away. Crawler-tractors are used to push dirt from one place to another, and to fix the land once the mine is closed.
In underground mining, articulated dump trucks are used instead. These trucks can move large amounts of materials, and can turn inside the mines easier than most trucks. Continuous miners are machines that cut out large sections of the walls inside a mine. Shuttle cars are used to take out minerals from the mine.
A large majority of the mining equipment is for the ventilation requirements in underground mines. It is however, an expensive process as the equipment circulates ventilating air at a rate of six cubic meters per second. Refrigeration of the air is often needed in mines to remove the heat generated. It is also needed in platinum mines in South Africa, where the geothermal gradient is even lower. This is, once again, a piece of equipment that takes up a large amount of energy.
These equipments cost large amounts of money, and this is why it is better to buy used mining equipment. It is important to study all your options when it comes to buying used mining equipment, but remember not to skimp when it comes to safety and quality. The backbone of any mining operation lies in the people so ensuring their safety becomes very important. Whether the equipment bought is new or used, the main thing to focus on is to make sure that the workers know how to use it correctly and efficiently. Used and reconditioned equipment offers the same reliability as new machinery bought directly off the assembly line, but can cost much less.
