Safety Tips for Crusher Operator


Safety should always be a major concern for crushering equipment operators and maintenance personnel. It is the responsibility of the operator to know what specific requirements, precautions and work area hazards exist to assure safe equipment operation. It is the responsibility of maintenance personnel to understand what hazards exists before any maintenance work is performed. Additionally, maintenance personnel should always exercise complete safety precautions while servicing equipment.

This section has been composed for Process Machinery Personnel. It outlines basic safety procedures that can help to prevent employee injury and equipment damage. This crusher section illustrates only basic safety procedures, additional precautions may be necessary for the safe operation of crushing products described in other sections of this manual.

Even the safest equipment should be operated with care and complete knowledge of machine performance capabilities. Remember, you are the key to safety. By practicing good safety precautions, you protect yourself and the people in your work area. Safety records show that the greatest percentage of accidents occur when an employee simply disregards safety rules. Familiarize yourself with your company’s safety program and insist that your fellow workers abide by safety rules and regulations. Do not consume alcoholic beverages before coming to work or while on the job. Beware of medicines, tranquilizers or other drugs which can make you sleepy or less alert. By practicing safety you prevent accidents from happening

Before you begin operation, read the operator’s manual furnished with your specific equipment. Learn equipment operation and maintenance procedures; capabilities and limitations. Understand the location and function of the controls, indicators, warning devices and caution instructions. Be alert to conditions such as low pressure or high temperature that may create a hazardous situation during operation.

Know Your Work Area And Keep It Clean: Learn as much as possible about the limitations of your work area. Know the weight limitations for any floors on which your equipments is located. Find out what the clearances are in the work area. A little time spent checking side and overhead clearances, including power lines, can save a lot of trouble later.
Be a good housekeeper. Keep the floor clean and free oil, grease, rags, cables, chains, buckets, rocks and other hazardous items. Keep loose parts or tools in a safe place. Be careful of dust, smoke or fog that may obscure your vision. Use only non-flammable solutions when cleaning equipment.

Always Be Prepared For Emergencies: Plan Ahead – Stay Alert – Operate Sensibly and you will avoid personal injury and accidental equipment damage. If an accident does happen – react quickly with the tools at hand. Know the location of fire extinguishers and first aid kits and how to use them. Know where to get prompt assistance – an emergency calls for fast action.

Dress Properly: Find out what safety items are required before you operate a piece of machinery. You may need any number or special items – safety hat, safety shoes, safety glasses, goggles, heavy gloves, ear protective devices, etc. Exercise safety measures by wearing all required safety items.
Loose clothing can catch in moving parts. Keep sleeves buttoned and jackets belted Wear clothing will keep you warm without restricting your movement. Wrist watches and rings should be removed to prevent possible injury. Keep your pockets free of objects that may fell out.
 

The safety procedures mentioned here do not eliminate all safety hazards found in the area of crushing plants.
