Phenacite Composition, Crystallization & Structure

Beryllium orthosilicate, Be2SiO.. Hexagonal-rhombohedral; trirhombohedral. Crystals usually rhombohedral in form, sometimes with short prisms. Often with complex development and frequently showing the faces of the third-order rhombohedron. Prismatic cleavage. H. = 7.5-8. G. = 2.96. Vitreous luster. Colorless, white. Transparent to translucent. Infusible and insoluble. A rare mineral, found commonly in pegmatites as a pneumatolytie mineral, associated with topaz, chrysoberyI, beryl, apatite, ete. Fine crystals are found at the emerald mines in the Urals, at Pike's Peak and Mount Ãntero, Colorado, and in Minas Geraes, Brazil. Occasionally cut as a gem stone.

Dioptase, H2CuSiO4., is a rare mineral belonging in this group.
