Mining Equipment in South Africa
South Africa is the world’s second largest producer of gold, and still has lots of other precious metals to offer. It is the world’s largest producer of manganese, chrome, platinum, vermiculite and vanadium. It is also the world’s second largest producer of palladium, ilmenite, zirconium and rutile. South Africa also has the title of being the third largest coal exporter in the world.
All these precious and common metals that South Africa produces comes from extensive time and money spent on mining, which in turn requires mining equipment. The mining equipment in South Africa is the same as that used anywhere in the world. The equipment required depends a lot on mining techniques. Surface mining is less dangerous and complicated than subsurface or underground mining, and therefore tends to be less expensive.
The type of mines also matter greatly when it comes to determining what type of mining equipment might be needed. Placer deposits refer to mines where the valuable minerals are found in the sands or gravel on the surface of the ground or at the banks of rivers, creeks or streams. Lode deposits are mines where the valuable minerals are found deep in the veins of other rocks. Both these types of mines require surface mining as well as underground mining methods.
Mining for placer deposits of minerals requires relatively simple equipment. Some examples are sluice boxes, metal detectors and pans. These pieces of equipment are used to locate minerals, and then separate them from the gravel, rocks or other deposits that they may be loosely scattered in. Some minor washing and shaking will be sufficient to remove the minerals from he sand and gravel, and then the minerals can be processed.
Lode mines require more complicated and expensive mining equipment, as regardless of whether the mining occurs at a surface or subsurface level, the rocks obtained need to be crushed in order to recover any valuable minerals. Several types of chemical and mechanical equipment is needed for this process.
Surface mining and subsurface mining require different types of mining equipment as well. In surface mining equipment is needed to remove any vegetation, dirt and bedrock that may be on the surface so as to reach the ore deposits that are buried underground. Open-pit mining requires mining equipment in order to form an open pit to mine in and then to quarry the required materials to the pit. A different type of mining equipment is also needed for strip mining and mountaintop removal, all done in the hopes of reaching the mineral deposits beneath the surface. Subsurface mining is more dangerous and therefore large amounts of money are spent on the appropriate, reliable mining equipment so as to ensure the safety of the miners and to decrease the difficulty of the mining and extraction process.
A large majority of the mining equipment is for the ventilation requirements in underground mines. These mining equipments keep the working conditions bearable. Refrigeration of the air is often needed in mines due to the large amounts of intense heat generated within mines to keep the conditions within the mines bearable.
