Mining Equipment India
Mining equipment cover a variety of machinery like Dumpers, Dozers , Hydraulic Excavators, Rope Shovels, Drag Lines, Drills, Wheel Loaders , Surface Miners, Highway Dumpers , Continuous Miners, Long Wall Equipment and they perform many functions like preparation of ground, excavation, material handling, etc.
India is most possibly the only developing country that’s self-reliant in producing such highly sophisticated mining equipment. It has a few mainly medium and large companies in the organized sector that manufacture this equipment. In comparison India’s scale of mining is essentially small even though large scale operations are present.
Before the 1960’s the entire domestic requirement for mining was met by imports. Domestic production of Mining equipment began in 1964, with setting up of Bharat Earthmovers Ltd. a public sector unit of the Ministry of Defense, at Kolar in South India.
The mining industry today is dominated by a few large manufacturers. The technology barriers in the industry have made it less fragmented. Some international companies are using their Indian operations to meet demand in South and South East Asia.
India is also gifted with a very significant amount of mineral resources, which also adds to the success in the mining equipment industry in India. The mineral industry is an important segment of the Indian economy. Let’s looks at some statistics, India produces 89 minerals in total which include 4 fuels, 11 metallic, 52 non-metallic and 22 minor minerals.
There are a series of policy initiatives and legislative changes that has been carried out to speed up investments for state of the art technology for the mining equipment sector in the county. This is an encouragement to the small scale companies that are also seeking to invest in the mining equipment industry in India.
The mining operations in the country have a major role to play in the technology for the mining equipment in India. Open cast mining is more popular in India than underground mining. These calls for heavy earth moving machinery and transport equipment which are the essentials needed for open cast mining and is manufactured at par with international standards.
Although when it comes to production of underground mining equipment the technology in India is not yet fully mechanized.
In the mining industry what has been proven to be productive, safe and available is generally not changed, unless new technology is more productive, safer and a higher utilization is expected.
It is expected that with the pick up in mining activity in India, mining companies will realize the need for higher production capacity and productive technologies. The demand for this equipment will lead to Indian companies starting to manufacture more mining equipment in the near future.
There are some companies which are also entering the equipment rental market which is attracted by the low interest. This will increase the demand for small and medium sized mining equipment which is produced in large numbers in India. Rental companies are also boozed up by the low custom duties and the removal of age restrictions for imports for second hand machinery.
