Iolite Cordierite Composition, Crystallization & Structure


A complex silicate of magnesium, ferrous iron and aluminum. Orthorhombie. Usually in short pseudo hexagonal twinned crystals, as embedded grains; massive. Vitreous luster. Color different shades of blue. Most commonly altered into some form of mica, becoming opaque and of various shades of grayish green. Found as an accessory mineral in granite, gneiss (cordierite gneiss), sehiste, and in contact metamorphie zones.
