A especial version of the overflow type is the Marcy open-end rod mill which has a discharge opening larger than the feed opening. This provides for a gradient of material flow through the mill. That is, material flow through the mill. That is,
material enters the mill at a higher elevation than it discharges and there is a slope of pulp within the mill form the feed end to the discharge end. This gradient provides a faster migration of fines than coarse material reducing the production of fine material. This preferential migration of fines does not occur in an overflow mill where both feed and discharge are at the same elevation and material leaves the mill by displacement only. Rapid removal of fines reduces the amount of costly overgrinding. Also, the large discharge end of the Marcy rod mill eliminates the need for manholes in the shell for an entrance.
