Wearing parts in the gyratory crusher may be either chilled cast iron or manganese steel, depending on the character of the material to be crushed and the particular class of service for which the machine is intended. Stand¬ard crushers, in the smal1 and medium sizes, are customarily fitted with chill¬ed-iron head and con caves for crush¬ing soft and medium limestone and materials of similar hardness and abrasiveness, because its relatively low first cost and
exce\1ent wearing qualities make it the most economical material to use when the service is not too severe. Manganese steel, which combines extreme toughness with un¬surpassed wear-resistance, is the uni¬versal choice for crushing hard, tough rock regardless of the class of service or type of crusher. Even though the rock be quite soft and non-abrasive, it is general practice to use man¬ganese steel concaves in the larger sizes of primary crushers because of the shock s attendant upon handling ¬large and heavy pieces of rock. |
