Modifiers in Summary

Froth Modifiers

Making the best choice of the proper modifying agents therefore depends on:

  • The type of mineral to be floated
  • The other minerals present
  • The collector to be used
  • The soluble salts in the ore pulp.

If two or more modifiers are used, the problem is complicated by the possibility of reaction between the modifiers.

Consideration of the chemical reactions can often result in improved metallurgical results and reduction in overall reagent costs. For example, sodium silicate would be wasted in a high-lime alkaline pulp because the calcium would precipitate the silicate. A cheaper and more effective method of removing the calcium would be by precipitation with soda ash (Na2CO3).
