Gold Loaming

Gold Loaming

This process is useless if visible gold has been detected. Taking some soil and small pieces of quartz that are 5 to 30 cm deep, over the veinlets outcrop, beside it or between to blocks of quartz aligning to its veinlets. This sample is washed in a tray (for the technique see the chapter on “Alluvial prospecting”) and gold evidence can be seen.

The operation is repeated in different points, always aligning to its veinlets. If gold presence isn’t homogenous throughout the outcrop, the presence of gold in an isolated point is of no value & meaningless.

Quartz washing (dolliyng)

This operation is done if the looming has given positive results, if the veinlets present visible gold or over debris where looming is impossible. Taking a sample of quartz between 500gm to 1kg. This sample will be weighed and ground in a mortar till it reaches dimensions of 0.160 mm (between 80 & 100 mesh tyler). The ground sample is then washed in the tray.

The gold separates itself (helped with a drop of mercury) and is weighed. The operation is repeated in different places of the outcrop.

This technique is not only used for prospecting gold in veinlets, but also when searching for heavy minerals (wolfram, tungsten, etc.) finely disseminated in a variable context and not only in veinlets.

H) Field book maintenance

All observations will be written in the field book.

In the case where the field book has fixed pages, it’s recommended to keep the pages on the left for the sample numbers and sketches.

Understandably, just the observations on outcrops will take up most of the book: general description of the outcrop and measurements, rock description, significant fissures and mineralization; notes on the methods of sampling and number of samples; in the case of finding traces of something, the description will be followed with a chart and sections.

I) Document update

Various maps should be made.

    • “Itinerary map”, with instructions of the itinerary, reference numbers, distances & markings of the corresponding numbers of the observation areas marked in the field book.
    • “Outcrop map”, with instructions through symbols, the nature of rocks, faults, direction and pitch of the stratifications and substance.
    • This document is always very useful to know possible traces & and can be retaken in cases of a geological regular removal.
    • On this map proper signs can be written, along with boulders, if the area is poor in outcrops.
    • “Map of the sample points”, that can have, as attachment, a chart with the results of the analysis
    • “Mineralization map”, on which all both old and recently discovered mineralization will be reported.

The discovery of evidence will give place to filling out a “form” which can be made as follows:
