Handling and Precautions
Because xanthates are primarily water soluble, the may be fed at a wide rang of concentrations. Five and ten percent solutions are commonly used, but even higher strengths may be advantageous in mills using large amounts of collector. One mill uses a 25% solution.
Solution strength can depend on consumption rate, and because xanthates in solution decompose with age, xanthate solutions should be prepared daily.
Xanthates are toxic to fish and must be kept out of natural water sources.
