Gold mining world
People have been mining for gold for thousands of years. Today, almost every continent in the world except Antarctica is continuing to mine for gold and the complexity of these operations ranges from a small simple mine to massive complex operations that extend miles beneath the surface and producers billions of troy ounces a year.
Gold mining consists of the processes and techniques employed in the removal of gold from the ground.
The Top three producers in the gold mining world are South Africa, United States and Australia and accounts for about 36% of the worlds Gold production. Peru, Canada, China and Russia are also large producers of gold.
Explorations for new gold mine productions are going on in places such as Ghana, Chile and Peru. There are some smaller scale explorations which are a success throughout Africa, Latin America and Asia. Continuous significant explorations are happening in China and the United states as well.
Since recently explorations and development at the major mining houses have been discouraged due to falling Gold prices.
Major gold producers are known as companies with a multiple number of gold producing locations. There are also minor gold producers which are smaller companies that represent about 80% of the operating mines worldwide. It only accounts for only about 50% of the worlds annual output which is mostly acquisition targets of the major gold producers. There are also small groups of companies which are on exploration and development ventures. They focus on finding economically-viable gold deposits and are very high risk ventures which are done with the hopes of creating a massive payoff.
The largest gold producing mine at present is in Johannesburg, South Africa. This gold mine produces up to almost half of the gold that is produced through out the world. It is also known to produce over 1000 tones of Gold in a year.
Mining is a major industry in South Africa. The worlds deepest and the largest working mines are located in South Africa which is called Tau Tona. The temperature in the mines in South Africa goes up to 100 Fahrenheit.
Other large gold producers are The Grasberg mine in Indonesia and Newmont’s Yanacocha mine in Peru which is 14,000 feet above sea level in Andes.
The world’s largest open-pit gold mine is situated in Western Australia. This mine was discovered in the 1800 after the British had settled in Australia established as a prison colony. When the Gold was discovered the British started immigrating into Australia.
Although Gold mining is attracting the attention of the world, it also has a major impact on the environment. The chemical that is used to recover gold from the rocks – Sodium Cyanide – is leached down the rivers and the environment is killing people, livestock and also the wildlife. In Brazil there was an issue raised by the dumping of tons of poisonous mercury in to the Amazon River system which killed fish and also threatened the health of the Brazilian human population.
