Canada leads in the gold industry right after USA, South Africa and Australia. Canada has 330 mines and produces 140,529 kilos of gold and has 90 percent of production rate. Some reserves have been exhausted in recent times and mines have closed down as a result of low pricing. The rest of Canada’s production has come from base metals and placer mines. Nine gold mines have closed in the year of 2002 and thirty mines remain in Canada.  The operations in Canada have decreased with closure of gold mines. Production cost in Canada in the one of the lowest and 90 percent of mining operations are underground where there is a relatively high productivity rate. A few mining companies are producing gold which includes Barrick, Placer Gold and TVX Newmont Americas. Some of the major producers such as Kinross Gold, Newmont and Cambior and Miramar are also producing gold in Canada.

Most of the gold mines are situated in Ontario. Placer Domes are situated in Dome, Campbell and Musselwhite. Gold has been mined in Dome since 1910. Presently Kinross has joined with Dome and they have joined operations in the Dome mine. Dome produced 178,100 ounces of gold in 2001. in 2002 the production increased to 180,000. There are some gold mines operated by Barrick. These include Bousquet, Holt, Eskay Creek, David Bell and Willaims.

Canada has acquired land which is very large consisting of four thousand acres in Bullard Mine, which is an Arizona gold producer. It has assembled mineral rights. There are gold deposits in the Bullard district regional settings.  There is a wide range of metals in gold deposits and the Canadian mining company is placing its focus on mineralization of gold and copper oxide.  Its aim is to discover gold deposits along the structures of the upper plate or the intersection using it as a model structure.

Canadian mining has a hundred percent ownership in a plant in Aguila in Arizona. It consists of 12 acres of highway and rail which has industrial accessibility and other requirements such as water and services to cater to its required production.

One of the largest mines underground in Canada is known as Agnico Eagle. This is situated in northwestern Quebec.  Gold production is estimated at 400,000. it produced 230,000 ounces of gold in the year 2001. The resources in this gold mine accumulate to 8 Moz worth of gold. The mine in Kinross Gold has high gold prices. Tow of the larger mines known as Newmont Mining Corporation operates in Ontario. There was a decline in production by 2004 since some of the reserves were exhausted. Three primary gold mines in the North and Central areas have estimated gold worth 1.4 Moz in resources.

Quebec’s north western area has one of the most prolific gold regions in the world. This is known as Aurizon. Aurizon operates hundred percent of Casa Berardi Mine and fift percent of Sleeping Giant. It is estimated that nearly 200,000 ounces worth of gold is produced by the Casa Berardi mine.
