EXTRACTING GOLD FROM REFRACTORY SULPHIDES
Obtain a good gold and silver recovery from refractory materials is a critical problem around the world due to the low extraction of precious metals encapsuled into some minerals such as pyrite and arsenopyrite. Normally, if direct cyanidation is applied, extraction will be low because there are several factors involved in the problem (e.g. mineralogical, chemical). One consequence is the high consumption of cyanide which trends to make no economical a possible treatment process. By other side, some concentrates can present contaminant elements that are considered penalties (e.g. arsenic, antimony, mercury). Although, concentrates can present a good amount of precious metals, commercialization is a very difficult task.
The present work tries to show some possible hydrometallurgical processes that can help to solve the problems mentioned above. The processes are chemical oxidation, oxidation under pressure, roasting, and bio-oxidation.
